Presencia de Asturias en WindEurope Offshore 2019

Asturias explores ways of business with the big players in the offshore wind sector

A large delegation from Asturias was present this week in Copenhagen (Denmark) at ‘WindEurope Offshore 2019’, the most important international conference of the offshore wind industry and in which our region demonstrated that it has a very important role to play in the future of this sector.

Invest in Asturias was part of the Asturian institutional delegation at the conference, organised by the Sociedad de Promoción Exterior Principado de Asturias S.A. (ASTUREX) and integrated by the Ports of Gijón and Avilés, the technological centre IDONIAL and a representation of Asturian companies that already work for the offshore wind sector.

The Regional Minister of Industry, Employment and Economic Promotion of the Government of the Principality, Enrique Fernández, showed with his presence in Copenhagen the strong support of the regional government to the Asturian industrial fabric, able to provide valuable solutions in the field of marine renewable energy, a real opportunity for our region.

Meetings with leading players in offshore wind energy

During the conference, the Invest in Asturias team held working meetings with several of the main players in offshore wind energy at European level, such as Alpha Wind Services, DTU Wind Energy, Energy Innovation Cluster, Eltronic, DWP System Supplier or SEMCO Maritime.

We also organised a meeting with representatives of MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, whose parent companies, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Vestas Wind Systems A/S, are two of the world leaders in wind onshore and offshore energy.

In all these meetings we tried to identify business areas in which our companies and institutions can take advantage of their potential to continue advancing in the manufacture of components and the provision of services in the supply chain of marine renewable energies, as they are already doing today.

The example of WINDAR as a reference for wind turbines

A good example of the opportunities that the sector offers to the Asturian business fabric is WINDAR Renovables, present at the conference as a company of reference to the world’s leading manufacturers of wind turbines.

Asturex, in collaboration with the Economic Development Agency of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA), coordinated the attendance of a representation of Asturian companies working for the offshore wind sector: Oxiplant, Mecainsa, Proinmec, Hierros Marcelino Franco, Bezzier, Astilleros Gondán and Ingoal. Also present were Pixelshub, Seerstems, Ingeniacity and Soar (startups that have channeled their presence with the support of the European Business and Innovation Centre (CEEI), the Ports of Gijón and Avilés and the IDONIAL technological centre.

Du Pont and Corteva, branches of the DowDuPont multinational, will have a European service centre in Asturias.

The North American multinational has opted for the Tamón complex (Carreño) to house its service centre, following Axalta’s envisaged transfer to the Asturias Technology Park in Llanera.

In Asturias the company has three factories, a service centre and 1,200 employees. Throughout this year it has incorporated around a hundred workers, a move that required additional building modules to accommodate them.

The service centre will function European-wide in the areas of human resources, information technologies, purchasing and logistics. It will also have a finance department offering its services globally. The companies are set to operate independently by 1st November, and the split will be definitive by June 2019.

Corteva, the agricultural division, and Du Pont, specialised products, belong to the DowDuPont company. This business conglomerate started operating in 2017 following the merge of the Dow Chemical and Du Pont multinationals. This multinational, with a 26-year history in Asturias, is present in over 90 countries, and is currently the largest chemical company in the world.
