China Three Gorges opens a technical office in Gijón Asturias

China Three Gorges to open in Asturias an office to oversee all its energy constructions in Europe

With the support of IDEPA, the office will be located in the Scientific & Technological Park of Gijón

China Three Gorges (CTG), the largest renewable energy group in China, chooses Asturias to establish an engineering division to oversee all of its energy constructions in Europe.

CTG is boosting the production of green energy and will open a technical office in Gijón for construction supervision, commissioning, and technical support activities.

To establish itself in Asturias, China Three Gorges has received the support of the Economic Development Agency of Asturias (IDEPA). The office will be located in the Impulsa Building, a business incubator belonging to the Gijón City Council and placed next to the former Universidad Laboral. 

Why Asturias: low turnover rate and technical qualifications of workers

These headquarters will have approximately 20 jobs in different phases. The company valued the low turnover rate of workers and the technical qualifications of the human resources available in Asturias as some reasons to set up in our region.

China Three Gorges Spain (CTGS) is part of China Three Gorges (Europe), a subsidiary of CTG Group, China’s largest clean energy group and the world’s largest hydropower company. It has around 115 GW of consolidated installed capacity worldwide (more than all the electrical power of any kind installed in Spain). 

CTG Europe is a strategic partner of EDP Energía, with a strong presence in Asturias (EDP’s Spanish headquarters are in Oviedo). CTG is the largest shareholder (19.03%) of the Portuguese company, and has made significant investments in other clean energy generation platforms in Spain, Portugal, Germany, the United Kingdom and Greece.

The office will be located in the Technology Park of Asturias, in Llanera, where Indaer expects to create up to ten highly qualified jobs

The Colombian aeronautical multinational Indaer has just opened a new brand, permanent office in Asturias. A project advised within the framework of the Invest in Asturias programme by the Economic Development Agency of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA), aimed at attracting investment to our region.

The opening reinforces the presence in Europe and the Middle East of Indaer, a leading company in aircraft lifecycle support solutions.

Sontara invests 7.63 million euros in the factory of Tamón with the support of the Government of Asturias

US company Glatfelter, owner of the Asturian factory, receives a 1.89 million euro grant to improve energy efficiency

Sontara Asturias is undertaking an investment of 7.63 million euros in its Tamón factory in order to increase the speed of its line of nonwoven fabrics for sanitary use and improve the energy efficiency of the facilities. The Government of Asturias is backing this investment with a grant of 1.89 million euros.

The first plan of the company, owned by the US company Glatfelter, consists of improving the energy efficiency of the main production line of the factory through specific actions in the winding and hydro braiding processes.

After 25 years in Asturias, its constant investments have allowed the development of a high value-added industrial activity in the automotive sector

The Economic Development Agency of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA) has awarded the IDEPA 2021 Award for Business Growth to PMG Asturias Powder Metal.

Part of PMG – Powder Metal Goldschmidt, PMG Asturias Powder Metal is a foreign capital company with a 25-year history in Mieres, Asturias. Its constant investment has allowed the development of a high added value industrial activity, such as the manufacture of mechanical components using sintered technology for the automotive industry.

Amazon construye un centro logístico en Asturias Siero

Amazon accelerates its setting up in Asturias as a major hub in northwest Spain

It is building a sortable fulfillment center in Siero, which will be one of the largest in southern Europe and will create around 2,000 jobs

It also announces the construction of a delivery station in Gijón and investments in its Meres receive center

Amazon is betting on Asturias as its major centre of operations for northwest Spain and part of Portugal. The US logistics and e-commerce global player is making good progress in the construction of its new sortable fulfillment center in Siero and plans to build a delivery station in Gijón and improve the receive center it has in Meres (Siero).

ArcelorMittal starts the revolution of the iron and steel process in Asturias with an investment of 1 billion euros

The multinational signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Spanish Government to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% in five years

It will build a DRI (direct reduction of iron ore) plant and an electric arc furnace at its Gijón factory

ArcelorMittal has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Spanish Government that will see a €1 billion investment in decarbonisation technologies at its plant in Gijón, Asturias, and means revolutionising the way the multinational produces steel in our region.

The investments will reduce CO2 emissions at ArcelorMittal’s Spanish operations by up to 4.8 million tonnes, approximately 50% of emissions, within the next five years. It will be its largest decarbonisation project in the world.

This is the main conclusion drawn from the XXVIII edition of the Asturias Business Forum, organised by the Economic Development Agency of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA) and held last Thursday 12th. December at the Hotel de la Reconquista, Oviedo.

Japanese multinational Krosaki Harima acquires the Asturian company Refractaria



The Asturian company Refractaria has been acquired by Krosaki AMR Refractarios S.A.U., belonging to the Japanese group Krosaki Harima Corporation, a leading operator in the sector. With this move, the Japanese company will expand its offer of refractory solutions to its client base.

Just as the Japanese company has announced, this acquisition “fits perfectly into the company’s growth strategy”. Thanks to this operation, the products of Refractaria and its new shareholder will be commercialised in over 60 countries.

Krosaki Harima Corporation has subsidiaries in 5 countries and develops refractory materials for the steel, lime and cement industries, as well as non-ferrous metal and continuous casting industries. It is listed on the Tokyo and Fukuoka stock markets.

Refractaria emerged in 1948 as a supplier of Duro Felguera’s refractory material. In 2008 the company embarked upon an internationalisation strategy by opening sales and delegation offices in 7 countries in different continents. It currently collaborates with the ITMA Foundation, as one of its founding partners, as well as in the Asturian Refractories Cluster.
