The ICT industry in Asturias shows its power in the 6th International Forum of the sector

The Asturian industrial network has undergone a major transformation and advanced services are taking on a greater role

Next Monday, October 26th, starts the 6th International Forum of the ICT Sector, turning Asturias into the epicentre of this industry. For three days, the participating companies will publicise their potential as generators of innovative projects and solutions, analyse the opportunities offered by the market and exchange successful experiences in different areas.

Industry 4.0, robotics, tourism intelligence, virtual reality or health will be some of the topics developed during the presentations of the Forum, which will highlight the enormous evolution that the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector in Asturias has undergone in recent years, as well as its potential for growth and attracting investment.

A growing interest in investing in Asturias despite the COVID19 pandemic

The Economic Development Institute of the Principality of Asturias has received 59 applications for aid from companies that want to invest

What can Asturias do to attract economic activity? Eva Pando, Managing Director of the Economic Development Institute of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA), outlined the keys to our region’s strategy to remain an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign investment during a debate organised by the Asturian newspaper La Nueva España,

Pando presented some data that gives an idea that, despite the crisis associated with the coronavirus pandemic, there is interest in companies to develop projects in our region. “We have received 59 applications for aid from companies that want to invest,” she said, adding that IDEPA is also working with 22 technology-based companies that have plans for Asturias.

Spain ranks 4th worldwide in the reception of foreign direct investment in greenfield projects

Greenfield projects mean that non-resident investors, bringing in all the capital from abroad, build the facilities “from scratch” to implement them

Spain was the fourth-largest recipient of greenfield projects in the world during the first half of 2020, according to FDI Markets, the database of the British newspaper Financial Times, which compiles Invest in Spain.

In these six months, 313 foreign capital greenfield projects have been carried out in Spain. Although this figure is 42% less than last year, the overall fall has been even greater. Fourth place also represents an improvement on the previous two years: in 2019, our country was in fifth place, and in 2018 it was in seventh place.

In terms of greenfield projects with innovative activities and high technological content – R&D, the establishment of corporate headquarters, ICT, and internet infrastructures – Spain was the sixth-largest recipient, after the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, and India.

Asturias, at the forefront of sustainable shipbuilding

The launching of the catamaran ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’, manufactured in Gijón and propelled by liquefied natural gas, is a technological milestone at a time of great activity and strength of the Asturian shipyards

A few days ago the launching of the fast ferry ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’ took place at the Armón Shipyard in Gijón. Commissioned by the Baleària company, it is the first high-speed passenger catamaran to sail propelled by liquefied natural gas.

This pioneering and innovative project, a milestone for the shipbuilding industry in Asturias, has been supported by leading Spanish and international partners and has involved an investment of 90 million euros.

This year marks two decades since the creation of the Association of Chemical and Process Industries of Asturias (AIQPA), which represents a key sector in the regional economy and is a flagship for the promotion of Asturias as an industrial region.

The association and the IQPA Cluster have been sponsoring the collaboration between professionals from companies in the sector for twenty years with a technical approach and a commitment to innovation, sustainability and cooperation.

Foreign investment grew in Asturias in 2019 above the national average

The chemical industry led the entry of inflows into the region

Foreign productive investment grew by 886% in Asturias in 2019 compared to 2018. It is the fourth position at national level in terms of annual increase, according to data made public by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

Specifically, gross investment (discounting Foreign Securities Holding Entities) increased in our region from 11 to 117 million euros. Asturias increased its inflow thanks to significant investment from the Chemical Industry, specifically the Artificial and Synthetic Fibre Manufacturing subsector, whose investment in the first quarter of 2019 represented an injection of 103 million Euros into the region. It is followed by Wholesale Trade and Programming and Consultancy sectors.

Asturias explores ways of business with the big players in the offshore wind sector

A large delegation from Asturias was present this week in Copenhagen (Denmark) at ‘WindEurope Offshore 2019’, the most important international conference of the offshore wind industry and in which our region demonstrated that it has a very important role to play in the future of this sector.

Invest in Asturias was part of the Asturian institutional delegation at the conference, organised by the Sociedad de Promoción Exterior Principado de Asturias S.A. (ASTUREX) and integrated by the Ports of Gijón and Avilés, the technological centre IDONIAL and a representation of Asturian companies that already work for the offshore wind sector.

Glencore to invest 100M euros in a new plant in Asturias

The Swiss multinational will build a state-of-the-art warehouse in the Asturiana de Zinc industrial site in San Juan de Nieva

The investment ensures a bright future for one of the most outstanding success stories of companies with foreign capital established in Asturias

The Swiss multinational Glencore will invest 100M euros in the modernization of the industrial site that its subsidiary Asturiana de Zinc, S.A. (AZSA) has in San Juan de Nieva (Castrillón, Asturias), which employs almost 800 workers.

Specifically, Glencore foresees the construction of a new electrolysis plant that will replace two of the current ones. Electrolysis is one of the final processes in the production of electrolytic zinc.
