This recognition represents a boost to the Asturian agri-food industry, the third sector of activity in the region
Oviedo will become in November 2020 the world capital of cheese by hosting the 33rd edition of the World Cheese Awards, the most important competition in the world in which more than 3,000 varieties will be evaluated by 250 international judges.

This decision is a recognition of the great work that has been carried out for years by the Asturian agri-food industry, which is of capital importance in the region’s industrial activity: it is the third sector of activity along with metal and extractive industries, energy and water.
In Asturias, tradition is mixed with academic training, technology and innovation, which creates the ideal ecosystem for companies to have decidedly committed to quality and adaptability to market demands.
Examples such as Nestlé, Reny Picot, Danone and other large agri-food companies with a strong presence in Asturias demonstrate the strength of the companies’ commitment to this sector and its great potential as an investment destination.
The branch of dairy products is what produces the highest turnover in the regional sector. Asturias is one of the areas with the greatest number of cheese industries in Europe, with more than twenty official varieties. All this is highlighted by bringing the World Cheese Awards to Oviedo.
