The region closed 2015 with over 226,000 followers on social networking sites. | The Hotel Association of Asturias platform recorded more than 17,000 overnight stays through the online booking platform.
Asturias seems to be very much at home on the web; throughout last year the region became the third most popular tourist destination on the social networks, beating online sales records made via the reservation headquarters managed by the tourism sector organisation. These two elements have propelled Asturias into the national growth of new technologies, positioning the region as a Spanish benchmark in the field of online communications and marketing for tourism.
According to data provided by the regional government, Asturias finished 2015 with 226,053 followers on its social networking sites, exceeding the 165,000 on Facebook, the region’s main online communication network for tourism. Likewise, the website www.turismoasturias.es received 1.6 million hits, twice the amount recorded in 2014.
The number of online followers and visitors has risen on both a national and international scale, and that is not the only thing to have increased. In 2015 the online reservation of tourist accommodation in Asturias smashed previous records, with 3,262 bookings made on the Hotel Association of Asturias platform, some 48% more than the previous year. These figures translate as more than 17,000 overnight stays in Asturias, according to the information published in the newspaper, La Nueva España.
Asturias has therefore built upon its strengths by using new technologies and social networks as a way of attracting tourism to the region and improving the sector.
