Maritime traffic is one of the most important means of foreign trade in Asturias | According to SADEI (Asturian Society of Economic and Industrial Studies), it makes up 95.26% of imports from Asturias and 84.38% of exports.
The ports in Asturias are one of the main drivers in the region for foreign trade with other countries. In fact in the first half of 2015, maritime traffic made up 95.26% of the total tonnes of imported goods, and 84.38% of exports from Asturias, according to information from SADEI.
These ports play a particularly important role in receiving goods into the country, with specialised docks for iron and steel works and energy traffic, as well as the handling of solid bulks and goods in general. Gijon is one of the main ports in the north of Spain, and along with the Aviles port, 7,388,656 tonnes of goods arrived between January and June 2015, some 7.34% over figures from the same period the previous year.
In terms of exportation, the maritime traffic in Asturias exceeds two million tonnes, according to SADEI, a figure that mirrors the exported tonnes recorded in the same six-month period the year before.
Gijon port has significantly increased the volume of goods transported. In fact, maritime traffic with Gijon in June this year increased by around 500,000 tonnes of goods, both for consumption, capital or intermediate goods, compared with the same month the previous year.
