Asturias Business R&D&I Centres Network

The Government of Asturias promotes the creation of research, technological development and innovation (R+D+I) centres linked to large companies based in our region. It does so through a line of non-refundable grants, on a competitive basis, so that the centres can carry out their action plans, improving the competitiveness of the company and also acting as a driving force for the regional economy

Alsa Innovation Centre (R&D&I)

Alsa is one of the companies that has created an R&D&I centre. Alsa celebrated its first 100 years of history in 2023, being the leading operator in the Spanish road passenger transport sector. It is part of Mobico Group, a leading international company that transports one billion passengers a year around the world. The Alsa Innovation Centre (R&D&I) was created in May 2023 with the challenge of leading the innovative potential of the sector. The main activity of the centre is to carry out R&D&l activities in digitalisation and sustainability that lead to new smart, sustainable, healthy, inclusive and multi-segment mobility solutions

ArcelorMittal Global R&D Spain

ArcelorMittal Global R&D Spain

The ArcelorMittal group was born from the merger of Arcelor and Mittal Steel in 2006. ArcelorMittal Asturias consists of two factories, Avilés and Gijón, and is the only integral steel plant in Spain. The ArcelorMittal Asturias plant, with an annual production capacity of around five million tonnes of steel, manufactures flat and coated products (heavy plate, galvanised coil and tinplate) and long products (rail and wire rod). Located in Gijón, Global R&D Spain’s research activity revolves around sustainability and decarbonisation, digitalisation, and production processes that generate sustainable steels. With an investment of 33 million euros in 2022, it has a workforce of around 300 people to provide solutions to the needs of any ArcelorMittal plant. More information

CINNO ALEASTUR Innovation Center Asturias

CINNO (ALEASTUR Innovation Center)

Grupo ALEASTUR develops tailor-made products for the metallurgical industry organised into two divisions: Aluminium and Steel. ALEASTUR’s CINNO (Innovation Centre) was set up in 2022 to bring together the development of all lines of research, their testing, and their application in industrial processes. The Smart Factory line seeks to use tools such as IoT, Big Data, Cloud Computing or robotics to configure a digitalised manufacturing facility. CINNO also develops new aluminium precursor alloys for additive manufacturing and the procurement of critical raw materials by valorising local sources of substitute materials. More information

DF INNOVATION HUB

Duro Felguera is a global company based in Asturias, founded at the end of the 19th century and now become an international benchmark. The company specialises in the full execution of EPC or turnkey projects and the provision of services in the energy and industrial sector. DF INNOVATION HUB, its R&D&I Centre, was created in June 2022 and develops high technological value projects focused to obtaining new products and processes. It works in areas such as IoT and automation, data science and AI, energy storage or the decarbonisation of industry.

Gonvarri Metal Structures R&D

Gonvarri Industries is a leading Spanish multinational in the transformation of flat steel and aluminium, with more than 60 years of history. It has more than 6,000 employees in 27 countries, with 54 factories. In Asturias, its facilities occupy more than 100,000 m2. In 2020, Gonvarri opened in Asturias the Gonvarri Metal Structures R&D centre. It serves the Metal Structures, Solar Steel and Precision Tubes divisions. The centre has 17 researchers and a network of collaborators made up of research groups from universities, technology centres, start-ups and innovative companies, clusters and institutional organisations

IDESA Technology and Research Centre

Ingeniería y Diseño Europeo, S.A. (IDESA), an Asturian company founded in 1993, is one of the leading suppliers in the manufacture of large equipment for the energy sector. IDESA has extensive experience in innovation and is committed to new technologies in different sectors. It is at the forefront of research and development in capital goods manufacturing technologies. In 2020, the company created the IDESA Technology & Research Centre. It aims to improve the results of activity in the industrial and energy sectors, in both renewable and conventional energies. Research into new materials to reduce production costs, the optimisation of welding processes and the use of virtual reality or digital twin technologies are some areas in which the centre stands out

Linter Technical Center

Samoa Industrial, S.A. (SAMOA), is an Asturian family company and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of equipment for transferring, distributing, dosing or recovering fluids, as well as inventory control systems. SAMOA designs and manufactures volumetric meters, hose reels, pneumatic piston pumps and pneumatic double diaphragm pumps. Linter Technical Center was founded in July 2020 to lead innovation and improve its products from Gijón, Asturias. The Center draws on the legacy and experience of its subsidiaries and SAMOA Group companies, located in the USA, England, France, Germany, Italy, and China

PMG Powertrain R&D Center

PMG Asturias Powder Metal manufactures precision powder metallurgical parts and assemblies for the automotive industry from metal powders, mainly iron-based. The company is part of the German Powder Metal Goldschmidt Group, committed to research and development activities focused on the electric car. PMG Powertrain R&D Center was established in 2020 in Mieres, Asturias, for the development and characterisation of new materials to manufacture parts. The centre also manufactures new components using the “press & sinter” powder metallurgy technique. It is home to the central R&D laboratory that provides scientific support to the PMG Group worldwide

SATEC HUB

SATEC Group is a Spanish multinational founded in 1988. Its parent company is SATEC (Sistemas Avanzados de Tecnología S.A.). SATEC offers end-to-end technological solutions and services in communication networks and information infrastructures, including the advanced integration of complex systems. SATEC HUB, the Group’s R&D and Entrepreneurship Centre, was created in 2020 with the main objective of promoting progress from Asturias through open innovation initiatives. It has 12 employees and its main areas of work are SmartAgro, Blue Economy, GeoScience, Industry 4.0 and next-generation networks (5G, 6G)

TKE Gijón Innovation Center

German TK Elevator is a world leader in urban mobility and lifts. It is present in Asturias through TK Escalator Norte, manufacturing elevators, escalators, and moving walkways, and TK Airport Solutions, specialized in the production of boarding bridges. In 2007, the company created the Gijón Innovation Center, a worldwide company innovation centre dedicated to radical innovations in passenger transport systems. The centre is a global reference in urban mobility, horizontal transport systems, acceleration corridors, virtual environments, artificial vision, and digitalization. The scale prototype of the pioneering MULTI project, the world’s first rope-free elevator, has been developed in Asturias.

Windar Technology and Innovation

Windar Renovables is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of wind turbine towers and a benchmark in the manufacture of substructures for the offshore wind industry. A company initially founded by Grupo Daniel Alonso, Windar Renovables offers a global supply chain, from the materials needed for their activities to the manufacture of products and their delivery. In 2020, the company created Windar Technology and Innovation, a business R&D centre aimed at meeting the technological needs of a constantly changing sector. It works in areas such as the development of new steels, digitalization, automation, circular economy, or software developments for process improvements (AR, VR, etc.).
