The Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute has been chosen again as the best private ophthalmological centre in Spain, and the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) ranks 18th among the 100 public hospitals with the best reputation. Both health infrastructures are located in Oviedo.

These are some of the results of the 2020 ranking of the Health Reputation Monitor (MRS), which rates the opinion held of the Spanish healthcare system. The ranking is based on the answers of more than 6,000 surveys of professionals, users, and the Media.

Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega

The Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute (IOFV), which celebrates its 135th anniversary this year, is also the third ophthalmology centre in the absolute ranking, only surpassed by the public hospitals of La Paz and Ramón y Cajal, both in Madrid. Its commitment to research, training and high-quality care is recognised with this position.

Four of the HUCA’s specialities are among the top twenty in Spain, according to the MRS: Otorhinolaryngology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pneumology and Psychiatry.

The Health Reputation Monitor (MRS) is the most prestigious independent ranking of its kind and is endorsed by the General Councils of Doctors and Nursing.

Medicine and the bio-health industry, strategic sectors in Asturias

The medicine and bio-sanitary industries are strategic sectors in Asturias. With the drive of infrastructures such as the HUCA, support for R&D projects from the University of Oviedo, and the notable innovative activities undertaken by the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Asturias demonstrates its marked support for the development of biotechnology, bio-information, and biomedicine.

The IOFV has a clear commitment to quality care, while at the same time maintaining a firm commitment to research and teaching. It carries out clinical research to assess results, offering new products in the fields of ophthalmology and vision sciences, based on its R&D&i projects.

And the HUCA combines attendance, teaching, and research, generating synergies with the surrounding infrastructures: the Foundation for Bio-sanitary Research and Innovation of Asturias (FINBA), the Public Healthcare Laboratory, and the Vivero incubator of health science companies.

In addition, the European Commission has selected Asturias as one of the European Reference Sites for innovation in Active and Healthy Ageing.
