Asturias to be one of the main nodes for green hydrogen in Spain

Two of the axes of the Spanish Green Hydrogen Backbone Network will converge in Gijón: the Cornisa Cantábrica Axis and the Vía de la Plata Axis.

Asturias will be one of the main nodes for green hydrogen in Spain. In Gijón will converge two of the axes of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network: the Cantabrian Cornisa Axis and the Vía de la Plata Axis.

The latter will fork when it reaches Asturias and will have two branches, one to Avilés and the other to the Port of Gijón El Musel, for the potential export of ‘green’ gas.

Enagás will begin processing the backbone network this year: the company will launch non-binding calls for interest in the Vía de la Plata Axis.

The Vía de la Plata axis will be used by the HyDeal consortium to supply clean energy from Castilla y León to the ArcelorMittal and Grupo Fertiberia factories in Asturias.

HyDeal is the joint venture created by Enagás with ArcelorMittal, Fertiberia, DH2 Energy and Soladvent to produce renewable hydrogen and bring it to our region.

Spain, Europe’s leading renewable hydrogen hub

Enagás claims that Spain has all the potential to become the first renewable hydrogen hub in Europe and at the same time meeting domestic demand.

The estimated potential for renewable hydrogen production in Spain by 2030 is between 2 and 3 million tonnes per year, rising to between 3 and 4 million tonnes by 2040, in addition to 750,000 tonnes imported from Portugal. Domestic demand for 2030 is estimated at 1.3 million tonnes, which allows for exports of around 2 million tonnes.

Green hydrogen represents a great opportunity for Asturias as a clean and sustainable energy generator and as a driver of economic activity and employment.

Asturias has leading companies (some with foreign capital) involved in the hydrogen value chain, producers of this green energy, water to supply the processes, infrastructures, and large consumers of the energy produced. Our region also has the talent and capabilities to continue advancing in this field.
